If you are experiencing ongoing or severe symptoms in your digestive system or if it is time for a colorectal cancer screening, you may need to see a gastroenterologist. Gastroenterologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tract conditions and diseases. This includes those found in the esophagus, stomach, large and small intestines, rectum, anus, gallbladder, liver and pancreas.
As the largest independent gastroenterology group in Northwest Louisiana, our experienced board-certified physicians provide the highest quality treatment for patients experiencing problems related to the digestive tract.
You should see a gastroenterologist if you have symptoms of a digestive health problem.
Common Gastrointestinal Symptoms
Although the occasional stomach upset, heartburn or stool irregularity is not usually a cause for concern, there are many symptoms that can be caused by serious conditions or diseases, especially if symptoms persist or become worse.
Symptoms that should be assessed by a gastroenterologist include:
- Changes in bowel habits
- Constipation that doesn’t resolve within a few weeks
- Diarrhea lasting more than a few weeks
- Sudden unexplained weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Frequent heartburn
- Difficulty swallowing
- Esophageal pain
- Abdominal pain and/or bloating
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Excessive gas
- Rectal bleeding
- Passing stools that:
- Are black or tarry
- Are pale
- Contain blood
- Dark urine
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- Fatigue
- Joint Pain
- Fever
Colorectal Cancer Screening
You should also see a gastroenterologist for routine colorectal cancer screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends screening to begin at age 45 for people with average risk. People who fit the criteria for average risk do not have:
- A personal history of colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, or abdominal or pelvic radiation treatment
- A family history of colon cancer
- Hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome (confirmed or suspected)
Cancer screenings can include stool-based tests or physical exams, such as a colonoscopy, CT colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. Learn more about cancer screenings at GastroIntestinal Specialists, A.M.C.
