Clinic Medical Assistant


GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:    Performs selected nursing and clerical duties that assist in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:    Reports directly to Clinic Nurse Supervisor

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:    None

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:    Full range of body motion required to include occasional handling and lifting of patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.  Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.  Working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours.  Potential for exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.  

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:   Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:   (May not include all of the duties assigned)

  1. Assists nurses in clinical area with patient care.
  2. Maintains timely flow of patients.
  3. Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination.
  4. Screens patients for appropriate information.
  5. Transports patients by wheelchair to exit.
  6. Assists nurse in disinfecting and cleaning of exam rooms.
  7. Responsible for preparation of exam rooms including restocking and cleaning.
  8. Assists nurses in preparing forms and schedules prior to patient’s arrival.
  9. Cleans and disinfects all clinic equipment and related instruments as needed.
  10. Keeps work area clean.
  11. Maintain good hygiene with proper uniform and shoes per practice guidelines.
  12. Attends required meetings as requested. 
  13. Assist in training of new personnel.
  14. Maintains work area in neat and organized manner.
  15. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  16. Performs related work as required.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  1. Knowledge of practice procedures and policies.  
  2. Knowledge of business office procedures.  
  3. Knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation to relay messages and input patient information.  
  4. Skill in operating a computer, photocopy machine, and fax machine.  
  5. Skill in answering the telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.  
  6. Ability to speak clearly and concisely. 
  7. Ability to communicate effectively.
  8. Ability to read and write English at a high school level. 
  9. Ability to read, understand and follow verbal and written instructions.  
  10. Ability to count and do basic arithmetic calculations.
  11. Ability to sort and file material correctly by alphabetic and numeric systems.  
  12. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.

EDUCATION:   High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:   

  1. Prefer one year work experience, but not required 

2.    Knowledge of medical terminology desirable.
