The Louisiana Research Center: Dedicated to Discovery, Committed to Care

High-quality care for gastrointestinal disease depends on continual research and clinical trials. Because research is imperative to advancing the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, our team of gastroenterologists has a center dedicated to clinical research.

The Louisiana Research Center, LLC is owned and operated by our gastroenterologists who are also partners in the GastroIntestinal Specialists, A.M.C. group practice. The practice has participated in a wide range of gastrointestinal studies since 1992, which led to the formation of the Louisiana Research Center in 2001 to further this area of expertise. Today, the center operates two locations with five full-time coordinators on staff.

“We provide a significant number of clinical trials for treatments for patients with different conditions, mainly patients with Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis and NASH,” said Dr. Humberto Aguilar.

Investigational studies we have participated in include:

  • Peptic Ulcer Disease
  • Erosive and Non-Erosive Esophagitis
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Anal-Rectal Disease
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Hepatitis C

We have also performed studies in healthy volunteers to study the potential effects of medications on the gastrointestinal tract.

The Louisiana Research Center adheres to Good Clinical Practice Guidelines, and utilizes a centralized institutional review board (IRB). The center also has an excellent record of timely completion of studies with accurate and complete source documents. Patients enrolled in clinical trials at the Louisiana Research Center will participate in studies completed in a timely and professional manner with the largest group of board-certified gastroenterologists in the Ark-La-Tex.

“We believe that research is very important because if nobody volunteers to do clinical trials, then no new drugs will ever be developed,” explained Dr. Aguilar. “We ask for our patients to participate in an act of generosity for their part but with the idea to help society, and humanity in general, to try to get better treatments for those conditions.”
